Having started out as an intern in the year 2015 and later on becoming a Research Assistant, it has been a great journey marked by tremendous growth and opportunities I would otherwise probably not have experienced which have immensely contributed to the person I am today both personally and in my work experience. The diversity experienced in working with the MNCH team has pushed me out of the comfort zones into realizing potentials I did not know I had. It has been a worthwhile experiencing with each moment presenting a learning curve.

I joined this great team in October 2013 and by then most of the studies were community-based. I worked as a Volunteer for a period of 3 months and later extended my stay for another 6 months for an internship program when the team set up the facility-based studies. At this point, I took up a bigger role of managing all the facility based studies within the Reproductive Health Department. The Pre-eclampsia study was the first to be initiated and now, 2 years later, we have more than 10 different studies runing consecutively.

How did you get here?

I was in love with microbiology until I met mothers and children in my rural village in Teso where I was working with global network on a community based study named "Zinc Absorption from Micronutrient Powder Is Low but Is not Affected by Iron in Kenyan Infants" a study that we have already published. While in the process of publishing the article, I saw an advert for a position of research assistant in an interesting study involving improvement of maternal and child health through the use of android phones. I was shortlisted for interview and luckily, I impressed the panel and therefore had a chance to work with an amazing team that I love and treasure.

How did you get here?

I came to Eldoret first as a 4th year medical student on an elective rotation. I found AMPATH and the people I worked with so exciting. I loved how the days were hot and the nights cool and how the elevation kept away the mosquitos. Over the years I kept my connections and managed to return during my MPH to help start the Pre-eclampsia study with its ever-long data collection form. Lately, I have been helping Heather design the Adolescent Pregnancy Program project on the Toronto side and hope to spend some more meaningful time in Kenya with the team in the near future.

How did you get here?

I did my first elective with AMPATH in the Department of Reproductive Health in 2008, as a 2nd year medical student. The AMPATH partnership felt like a true collaboration and a sustainable way to be involved in global health and I knew that I wanted to be involved over the long term. I then came back to Kenya in 2010 and 2014 for further electives and then spent 9 months in Eldoret in 2015/2016 as the Reproductive Health Team Leader. I am now one of the AMPATH-RH Research Directors and am helping, in particular, with the launch and programs of the new Rafiki Centre for Adolescent Health at MTRH. Throughout this journey so far, my excitement and enthusiasm for AMPATH have been sustained by the amazing energy and warm hearts of the entire RH team.

In 2015, i Volunteered for a Project started by the Kenyan Government ; Kenya National Future Leaders Program (G-United) in Machakos County. I did Social work and Community Development, National Cohesion and Integration and also participated in several community projects. This in a way changed my passion to want to be in an Environment where i can be able to impact a Community, the lively-hoods of people especially in vulnerable areas. I wanted to be in a place where i could see the positive changes am making to a child, a mother, a family or a rural community. Shortly after the Volunteering i went for a short training at Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) Regional Leadership Center, East Africa during which i started applying for a Jobs especially at Ampath because i wanted to come back to the Community i was brought up in. In May 2016, i got the opportunity to serve as an Intern in the AMPATH-MNCH Department. Serving as an Intern before becoming the Office Administrator gave me the opportunity to learn all about the project.
